ETIAS is not open for applications: what travelers can do now
ETIAS is not operating and is not accepting applications. Check the official EU site for a launch announcement before paying for an application service.
Does this affect your trip?
- The future requirement primarily covers visa-exempt travelers making short stays in 30 participating European countries, including Cyprus.
- Eligibility also depends on the travel document and residence status; the official page lists specific cases.
Common exceptions
- Nationals of countries requiring ETIAS and Irish nationals are exempt.
- Qualifying visa and residence-document holders, and several special categories, do not need ETIAS.
ETIAS does not replace a required visa. Residence-document exemptions have specific Ireland and Cyprus conditions, so do not assume any European residence permit is sufficient. The full official eligibility page controls.
Exact launch date unannounced
A Commission article published on 28 April 2026 gave a Q4 2026 planning window. The live ETIAS homepage currently says applications are closed and a specific date will be announced several months before launch; it does not repeat that window.

What is confirmed today
The live EU homepage and launch FAQ say ETIAS is not yet operating and no travel-authorisation applications are being collected. There is no application to complete today.
The EU says it will communicate a specific start date several months before launch. Watch that official notice rather than treating a date on a commercial application website as confirmation.
How to read the earlier Q4 timetable
The European Commission's 28 April 2026 explanation scheduled ETIAS for the last quarter of 2026. That was a planning window, not an exact launch day.
The current traveler-site banner does not repeat Q4. That omission does not itself prove a postponement, and the sources reviewed do not establish a replacement date. October 1 should not be treated as the start date.
Prepare for the requirement without applying early
Check the official eligibility page against your nationality, destination and residence documents. ETIAS primarily concerns visa-exempt short stays; it will not remove a visa requirement.
EES border registration is a separate process that already operates. The fact that ETIAS is closed does not mean you are outside EES. When ETIAS applications open, the official EU website and official mobile app will be the direct application routes.

Can I apply now to get ahead?
No. The official EU website says it is not collecting ETIAS applications. Check there for the announced opening date.
Will everyone pay the €20 fee?
The published fee is €20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 and certain qualifying family members are exempt from payment. A fee exemption is not the same as an exemption from needing authorisation. Recheck the fee when applications open.
Are other ETIAS application websites official?
The EU identifies its own website as the direct application channel. Commercial intermediaries may charge extra and collect your data; their existence alone does not establish fraud. ETIAS applications are currently closed on the official channel.
